Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Quito, Ecuador

Location: Nationwide

Event: The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities (CONAIE) and several social organizations are planning political demonstrations nationwide beginning October 26 in response to the government decision to freeze fuel prices. The Embassy has received reports of demonstrators blocking highways in multiple Andean and Amazonian provinces by burning tires and dumping rock sand and gravel on the roads. In Quito, a demonstration is also planned for El Arbolito and El Ejido Parks, to continue down Avenida 10 de Augusto, and finish at the Presidential Palace. The duration and size of the expected demonstrations is unknown. Some past demonstrations have turned violent and security forces have responded with crowd dispersal agents to maintain public order.

During this time, please take the following actions:

  • Avoid crowds.
  • Avoid demonstration areas.
  • Monitor local media for updates on road closures.
  • Exercise caution if transiting through affected areas.
  • Consider alternate routes.
  • Maintain increased vigilance.
  • U.S. citizens should continue to comply with all local movement restrictions.
