This morning, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met with Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso at the presidential palace. It was President Lasso’s first bilateral meeting following his inauguration yesterday.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield congratulated President Lasso on his inauguration after a transparent, free, and fair election, and praised the Ecuadorian people for participating in the democratic process. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and President Lasso discussed the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Ecuadorian people and President Biden’s commitment to accelerating the equitable distribution of vaccines globally.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield commended President Lasso for his strong commitments to fight corruption, strengthen human rights and press freedom, expand economic opportunity, and support Venezuelan refugees and migrants. They discussed a shared commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the United States and Ecuador, which will strengthen the security and prosperity of people of both nations and across the region.
