Statement by U.S. Ambassador Michael J. Fitzpatrick

The events that occurred yesterday in Washington should remind us of the importance of respect for the rule of law and institutions, as well as the value of democracy, which is the only mechanism that enables a society to address its ills and solve its problems peacefully, institutionally, and transparently.

Early this morning, the Congress of the United States of America finalized the count of Electoral College votes as prescribed in the Constitution, and certified Joseph R. Biden as President-elect and Kamala D. Harris as Vice President-elect, both of whom are to take the oath of office on January 20, 2021.

We will continue to advocate for democracy, security, and freedom throughout the hemisphere, as we remind ourselves that these are not to be taken for granted.

I appreciate the expressions of concern from Ecuadorians over these unprecedented acts of political violence, as well as their reaffirmation of support for our shared bedrock principles.
