Statement in honor of the 4th of July

Today marks the 246th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the United States. On this day, we celebrate with family and friends the founding of a pluralistic yet united democratic society. Throughout this journey, the United States has experienced the benefits and challenges of democracy, like many other nations.

The current challenges to democracy are great. Some individuals and groups try to prevent democratic processes or overturn their results. Some pressure government officials to vote or act against their conscience or the law. And some use technology to change results, spread disinformation, or block the free flow of information.

These types of illiberal actions take place around the world and are the work of those who seek to impose their will upon a nation, its institutions, and its citizens. Throughout the history of the United States and other like-minded nations, it has been the responsibility of democratic governments, institutions, and their citizens to uphold and defend democratic values and the rule of law.

The anniversary of the independence of our nation is a reminder of the values, freedoms, and rights we hold dear. And our duty as citizens to support democracy and each other.
