Quito, July 25, 2023. The United States Government celebrated the swearing in of 32 new United States Peace Corps Volunteers in Ecuador. The volunteers will serve in thirteen provinces in two programs: 16 volunteers in Health and Well-being and 16 volunteers in Youth and Family Development.

The ceremony, which took place at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence, was attended by Michael J. Fitzpatrick, United States Ambassador to Ecuador; Michael A. Donald, Director of the Peace Corps; Esteban Amores, Subrogate National Director of Cooperation and International Relations of the Ministry of Health; and Washington Quinchuela, National Youth Director of the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion. In addition, officials from the U.S. Embassy, Peace Corps, host families, and other guests were present.

“Since 1962, when the Peace Corps was established in Ecuador, almost 7,000 volunteers have served in the country. The Peace Corps and the work of its volunteers are aligned with the National Development Plan of Ecuador and works side-by-side with the communities for the benefit of the Ecuadorian people,” said Ambassador Fitzpatrick during the swearing-in event.

The Peace Corps was created in 1961 under the presidency of John F. Kennedy with the purpose of promoting peace in the world and fostering understanding and friendship among nations through the volunteer work of Americans in other countries. The Peace Corps has worked in Ecuador since August 1962, one year after the agency opened worldwide and after a bilateral cooperation agreement was signed between Ecuador and the United States.
