U.S. Department of State Under Secretary for Political Affairs to Visit Quito

Under Secretary Victoria Nuland will lead an Expanded Bilateral Political Dialogue meeting with President Lasso and Foreign Minister Holguin and will sign the Open Skies Agreement.

Quito, November 15, 2022. Victoria Nuland, Under Secretary for Political Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, will visit Quito tomorrow, where she will lead an Expanded Bilateral Political Dialogue with her Ecuadorian counterparts. She will also meet with President Guillermo Lasso and Juan Carlos Holguín, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss bilateral priorities. Under Secretary Nuland will be accompanied by a delegation from Washington, DC consisting of Mark Wells, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere and Homelands; Charisse Phillips, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Narcotics and Law Enforcement; and Peter Natiello, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Agency for International Development (USAID).  

“This Expanded Bilateral Political Dialogue reaffirms U.S. support for Ecuador on democratic governance, regional security, human rights, regional migration management, support for vulnerable populations, and climate change,” said Michael J. Fitzpatrick, U.S. Ambassador to Ecuador. 

The Under Secretary will also sign, together with Minister Holguin, the Open Skies Agreement which allows for the expansion of passenger and cargo flights between Ecuador and the United States, thereby promoting increased travel and trade, and stimulating opportunities for high-quality employment, cultural exchange, and economic growth.
